At the 2020 U.S. Census the population was 196,543, up from 191,719 at the 2010 census. It is located about 10 miles (16 km) north of downtown Los Angeles. The Golden State, Ventura, Glendale, and Foothill freeways run through the city. The city is bordered to the northwest by the Sun Valley and Tujunga neighborhoods of Los Angeles; to the northeast by La Cañada Flintridge and the unincorporated area of La Crescenta. To the east by Eagle Rock and Pasadena; and to the southeast by Glassell Park and Atwater Village. In 1884, residents gathered to form a townsite and chose the name "Glendale". It was bounded by First Street on the north, Fifth Street (now Harvard Street) on the south, Central Avenue on the west, and the Childs Tract on the east. The GlendaleBurbank Line, which was operational from 1904 to 1955, ran from Downtown Los Angeles to Burbank via Glendale. The main line continued north in the pavement of Brand Boulevard to a terminus in North Glendale at Glendale Mountain. The line diverged westerly as a single-track line in the center of Glenakso Mountain in the Verdugo Mountains. It became a single track line at Atden Junction, where the main line became a fly-in fly-out line at Arden Junction. It continued north to the end of the line in Burbank, where it branched off into a private road.

Geography

Glendale is located 10 miles (16 km) north of downtown Los Angeles. It is bordered to the north by the foothill communities of La Cañada Flintridge, La Crescenta, and Tujunga; to the south by the Atwater Village and Glassell Park communities incorporated by the city of Los Angeles; and to the east by Pasadena and Eagle Rock. The city has a Mediterranean climate (Köppen climate classification: Csa), with hot summers and mild-to-warm winters with occasional rainfall. The highest recorded temperature in Glendale was 115 °F (46 °C) on September 6, 2020. The warmest month is August and the coolest month is January. Rainfall totals are highly variable from year to year, with the wettest years (sometimes over 30 inches (760 mm) of rainfall) usually associated with warm El Niño conditions, and the drier years with cool La Niña episodes in the Pacific. The hills and mountains of northern Glendale very rarely have snow, owing to its warmer temperatures during the winter. It may only occur about every five to ten years. The last time it snowed was February 26, 2011, in which snow accumulation of approximately 3 inches (7.6 cm) occurred and sleet was present. Thunderstorms rarely occur and they are accompanied by gusty winds. Frost sometimes occurs at night from late November to early March. Heavy rains and thunderstorms are also common during theWinter.

Demographics

The 2010 United States Census reported that Glendale had a population of 191,719. According to the Southern California Association of Government's 2016 Demographic and Growth Forecast, the population of Glendale is expected to reach about 214,000 by 2040. The racial makeup of the city was 71.1% (136,226) White, 1.3% Black (2,573) Native American, 16.4% (31,434) Asian (6.9% Filipino, 5.4%. Korean, 1,3% Chinese), and 4.5% (8,687) from two or more races. Hispanics or Latino residents of any race made up 17. 4% of the population (33,414). Non-Hispanic Whites were 61.5%. The average household size was 2.63. The median age was 41.0 years. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.9 males. The city had a median household income of $53,020, with 14.2% of residents living below the federal poverty line. There were 73,713 housing units averaged 2,405.3 per square mile (928.6/km²), of which 27,535 (38.1%) were owner-occupied, and 44,734 (61.9%) were occupied by renters. The homeowner vacancy rate was 1. 3%; the rental vacancy rate is 5.5%; 76,769 people (40.0%) lived in owner- occupied housing units and 113,521 people (59.2%).

Economy

Grand Central Airport was a municipal airport developed from 1923 which became the largest employer in Glendale for many years. From 1985 to 1995, Walt Disney Animation Studios (then known as Walt Disney Feature Animation) was headquartered in the Grand Central Business Centre. The city experienced significant development in the 1970s, with the completion of the Glendale Freeway (Highway 2) and the Ventura Freeway. In August 2013, Avery Dennison Corp., a label maker for major brands, announced plans to move its headquarters from Pasadena to Glendale. The U.S. headquarters of the Swiss foods multinational Nestlé plans toMove out by 2018. The Glendale Public Library on Harvard Street houses its "Special Collections" department which contains original documents and records on much of the history of the city. In 1994, Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and David Geffen formed DreamWorks SKG, a diversified entertainment company. DreamWorks Animation remains located in the city's GrandCentral Business Centre on land formerly occupied by a helicopter landing base next to the old airfield (and next to KABC-TV). Thus, many American animators who worked on feature films in the 1990s and 2000s have spent large parts of their careers in Glendendale working for Disney or DreamWorks. Glendale Galleria's shopping mall is anchored by Macy's, Target, J.C. Penney, and the American Penney Co. The new Glendale Farmers Market opened on May 2, 2008, which features 75 shops and restaurants.

Arts and culture

The Alex Theatre opened in 1925 as the Alexander Theatre. In 2016, the Museum of Neon Art moved to Glendale. The Alex Theatre is located in the heart of downtown Glendale, California. It is located on the west side of the city, near the intersection of Interstate 5 and I-215. The theatre is open to the public on weekdays, and to the general public on Saturday and Sunday. It has a capacity for 2,500 people, including 1,000 standing-room-only seats. The Theatre is home to a number of performing arts companies, including the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra and the Phoenix Ballet. It also hosts a variety of other cultural events, such as the Phoenix Art Fair and the Arizona Film Festival. The museum is also home to the Arizona Museum of Contemporary Art, which opened in 2013. The Museum is also the home of the Arizona State Museum of Art and Design, which was opened in 2010. The Art Museum of Arizona is a non-profit organization that promotes Arizona art and culture. It was founded by Arizona State University and the University of Arizona in the 1970s. The Arizona Art Museum is based in Glendale and has a permanent exhibition space on the second floor of the Alex Theatre. It opened its doors to the community in 2008. The Gallery of Arizona was opened by the Arizona Art Gallery in 2011. The gallery is located at the Arizona Center for the Performing Arts, which also opened in the same building in 2012. In 2013, the Gallery moved to a new location, the Art Gallery at Arizona State.

Parks and recreation

The city has nearly 50 public parks, from Deukmejian Wilderness Park to Cerritos Park in the south. The city's parks are open to the public on a daily basis. The parks are free to use, but there are some fees for parking and other services.

Government

Glendale is a city in Los Angeles County, California. The City Council selects one member to serve as Mayor for a one-year term. The current mayor and council members are: Ardy Kassakhian, Elen Asatryan, Ara Najarian, Paula Devine, and Daniel Brotman. Glendale is in the United States House of Representatives, represented by Democrat Adam Schiff. In the California State Legislature, Glendale sits in the 25th Senate District and the 43rd Assembly District. The Los Angeles county Department of Workforce Services, Aging and Community Services operates an undisclosed Adult Protective Services office in Glendale. The LA County Department of Public Social Services operates the Glendale DPSS welfare office on San Fernando Road. The Glendale Community College District Board of Trustees holds elections on a Tuesday after the first Monday in April of odd-numbered years. The city's most recent comprehensive annual financial report, the city's various funds had $576 million in revenues, $543 million in expenditures, $2,090 million in total assets, $481 million intotal liabilities, and $460 million in cash and investments. It is in California's 28th congressional district, represented in the U.S. House of Reps by Democrats Adam Schiff and Anthony Portantino. It has a mayor and four council members, all of whom serve four-year terms. It also has a parks and recreation department, which operates Crescenta Valley park in North Glendale and an undisclosed adult protective services office.

Education

The Glendale Unified School District operates the public schools in Glendale. Glendale is also home to Glendale Community College. The GUSD high schools include Glendale High School, Herbert Hoover High School and Clark Magnet High School. A number of private schools also operate in the city. The district also operates Roosevelt Middle School, Toll Middle School and Rosemont Middle School. It is home to the California State University, Los Angeles, and the University of California, San Diego. The city also has the Los Angeles County Air and Space Museum and the California Museum of Natural History and Science, which is located in downtown Los Angeles. It also has a number of museums, including the California Science Center, the California Natural History Museum, the National Museum of Nature and Science and the Museum of Science and Industry, which are located in the downtown area. The town also has its own version of the National Park Service, which was established in 1872. It was the first national park in the U.S. and is still in operation today. It's also the site of the California Desert Museum, which dates back to 1871. The California Desert Park Zoo, which opened in 1875, is also based in the Glendale area. There are several parks in the area, including one in La Crescenta, which has been there since 1875. There is also a park in downtown Glendale that was built in the early 1900s. The Glendale River runs through the city, which runs through Glendale and is a popular tourist destination.
