LaGrange is a city in and the county seat of Troup County, Georgia, United States. The population of the city was estimated to be 30,858 in 2020 by the U.S. Census Bureau. It is the principal city of the LaGrange, Georgia Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is included in the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Gainesville, Georgia-Alabama (part) Combined Statistical Area. The city's proximity to West Point Lake, a few miles to the west, helps attract bass fishermen and water sports enthusiasts to the city. The area was developed for cotton plantations, and planters migrating from the eastern areas of the South brought along or bought enslaved African Americans in the domestic slave trade to use as laborers. It was named after the country estate near Paris of the wife of the Marquis de La Fayette, a Revolutionary War hero, when he visited Georgia in 1825 on a national tour. The town was defended by a volunteer women's auxiliary group known as the Nancy Harts or Nancy Hart Rifles, named after Nancy Hart. It has its only assembly plant for US Motors, which also has its headquarters for North American Caterpillar's forestry division in neighboring West Point, south of La Grange in neighboring Troup county. It's the hometown of rapper and songwriter Bubba Sparxxx, best known for hiphop and country rap, and is also the home of the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church, which was founded in 1973.
History
LaGrange is named after the country estate near Paris of the wife of the Marquis de La Fayette. The European-American settlement of LaGrange began in the early 19th century. The area was developed for cotton plantations, and planters brought along or bought enslaved African Americans in the domestic slave trade to use as laborers. During the American Civil War, La Grange was defended by a volunteer women's auxiliary group known as the Nancy Harts or Nancy Hart Rifles. In 2000 the city was named "Intelligent Community of the Year" by the Intelligent Community Forum, joining other cities such as New York, Singapore, Seoul, Glasgow and Toronto. The city has transitioned to a mixed economy with some new industries, including Wal-Mart Distribution Center and KIA Motors assembly plant in neighboring West Point, Georgia. It also has been ranked as a Georgia City of Excellence, received a Government Technology Leadership Award and received a public apology of its police chief and mayor for the city's failure in 1940 to protect a 16-year-old African-American resident from being lynched. The police chief did not report the murder very thoroughly, nor investigate it very thoroughly. On November 8, 2021, it was announced that Upstate-based firearms manufacturer, Remington Arms, would be moving their headquarters from Ilion, New York to Lagrange, hiring 865 people over five years. The move is expected to cost $100 million and will be over the span of five years, with the city expected to benefit from the new headquarters.
Geography
LaGrange is at 33.0367° N, 85.0319° W. The city is in west central Georgia along Interstates 85 and 185, which run east of the city. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has an area of 112.8 mi (181.5 km) of which 111.4 mi (179.3 km) is land and 1.4mi (2.3km) is water. LaGrange has a population of 2,816. The town is located on the Georgia Turnpike, which runs northeast to Atlanta and southwest to Montgomery, Alabama. The turnpike runs northeast for 68 mi (109 km) and southwest for 96 mi (154 km) to Montgomery and Columbus. The Turnpikes also run northeast for 43 mi (69 km) from the city to Columbus and south for 43 miles (69km) to Columbus. La Grange is home to a number of state highways, including Georgia State Route 29, Georgia State. Route 219, and Georgia. State Route 109 all meet in the interior of the town. Lagrange is also home to the Georgia State Museum, which is located in the city's downtown area. The museum is open to the public and has a collection of state and federal historic buildings. The state museum is on the turnpikes' former site, which was built in the 1800s. It is located at the intersection of Georgia State Routes 27, 29, and 219.
Government
LaGrange is governed by a mayor and six-person city council. The mayor is elected citywide (at-large) Three council members are elected to one post each from each of two council districts. The city council hires a full-time city manager, who oversees daily operations of city departments. In January 2017, Police Chief Louis M. Dekmar apologized publicly for his department's failure in 1940 to protect a 16-year-old black youth, who was lynched. "And for that, I'm profoundly sorry. It should never have happened," Chief Dekmar told a crowd at a traditionally African-American church. "I sincerely regret and denounce the role our Police Department played in Austin's lynching, both through our action and our inaction," Mayor Jim Thornton said in the same speech. "We are committed to improving conditions in the city of LaGrange," the mayor said in a statement after the apology. "It should never has happened," he said. "The city has come a long way in a very short time." The city has a population of about 2,000, about half of whom live in La Grange, a suburb of Austin. It is located on the Texas Turnpike, about 30 miles south of the city's main drag. The town is about 20 miles from Austin, the center of the Texas-Louisiana-Texas state line. It has about 4,000 residents, about 1,000 of whom are African-Americans.

The Troup County School System holds pre-school to grade 12. It consists of 15 elementary schools, three middle schools, and three high schools. The county is divided into three school zones. The school system serves Hogansville, LaGrange and West Point. It is home to over 20 new and recently renovated schools. In addition to public schools, the county has a private school system and a college system. It also has a state-run high school and a technical college. It has a number of private schools and colleges, including a Montessori and a private Christian school.
