As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 76,618. The city is home to the Southfield Town Center complex, which includes five connected office buildings. The tallest of these, 3000 Town Center, is 402 feet (122.5 m) tall; it is the state's second-tallest building outside Detroit (after the River House Condominiums in Grand Rapids) Southfield is a commercial and business center for the metropolitan Detroit area, with 27,000,000 square feet (2,508,400 m2) of office space. Several internationally recognized corporations have major offices and headquarters in Southfield, including Veoneer, Huf Hülsbeck and Fürst, Denso, Peterson Spring, Federal-Mogul, Lear, R.L. Polk & Co., International Automotive Components, Stefanini, Inc., and Guardian Alarm. Fifth Third Bank announced plans to move its Michigan regional headquarters from Southfield to downtown Detroit in October 2014. The U.S. Consulate of Iraq in Detroit is in the Town Center and the U.N. Embassy in Detroit has been regularly held since 2014. Southfield City Centre was created in 1992 as a special assessment district and was originally planned to improve pedestrian amenities and facilitate economic development. As of 2022, the property is being redeveloped as a mixed-use residential and commercial complex. Northland Center, one of the nation's first shopping malls, opened in Southfied in 1954 and closed in 2015.

History

Southfield is the primary city name, but also Lathrup Village, Lathrup Vlg are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is City of Southfield. Town 1 north, 10 east was first organized as Ossewa Township on July 12, 1830. The name was changed to Southfield Township 17 days later. The township took its name from its location in the "south fields" of Bloomfield Township. Most of what was left of the township was formally incorporated as a city on April 28, 1958. City Hall was built in 1964 as part of the new Civic Center complex. The Civic Center was expanded in 1971 to include a sports arena with swimming pool. Evergreen Hills Golf Course was added in 1972, and in 1978, a new public safety building, the Southfield Pavilion, and a new court building were added. In 2003, an expanded and redesigned Southfield Public Library opened to the public on the Civic Center grounds, featuring state-of-the-art facilities. Outside of City Hall, Southfield has municipal parks and recreation facilities, largely developed in the 1970s, including Beech Woods Recreation Center and John Grace Community Center. In the 1950s, cities and villages began to incorporate within the township, including Lathrup Village in 1950, and Beverly Hills in 1957. The first settlers came from nearby Birmingham and Royal Oak, Michigan, as well as New York and Vermont. The area that became Southfield was settled by John Daniels in 1823. Among the founders were the Heth, Stephens, Harmon, McClelland and Thompson families. The Southfield Fire Department was formed on April 6, 1942, and Southfield Police Department in 1953.

Economy

Southfield has 27,000,000 square feet (2,508,400 m2) of office space. More than 100 Fortune 500 companies have offices in Southfield. Fifth Third Bank announced plans to move its Michigan regional headquarters from Southfield to downtown Detroit in October 2014. Northland Center, one of the nation's first shopping malls, opened in 1954 and closed in 2015. As of 2022, the property is being redeveloped as a mixed-use residential and commercial complex. Southfield is home to over 780 acres (3.2 km²)of parkland and a nationally recognized public school district. It is the second-largest city in the Detroit metro area to Detroit's central business district of 33,251,000 sq ft (3,089,000sq ft) Southfield has a population of 1.2 million (1.3 million in the U.S. Census estimates). Southfield's population is 1.4 million (0.7 million in 2010 Census data). It has a GDP of $28.2 billion (1 billion in the 2010 Census estimate) and an unemployment rate of 0.7%. It has an average population of 2.1 million (2.0 percent in 2010 census data) and a population growth rate of 3.2 percent (1,000 in the 1990s). It is one of only two cities in the United States with more than one Fortune 500 company in its office base. It also has a large number of international corporations with major offices and headquarters.

Southfield City Centre

Southfield City Centre was created in 1992 as a special assessment district. It was originally planned to improve pedestrian amenities and facilitate economic development. It is near the intersection of Interstate 696 (I-696, Walter P. Reuther Freeway) and the M-10 (Lodge Freeway). It is a mixed-use area consisting of a major business center, private university, and residential neighborhoods. The city centre is home to the University of Michigan, Southfield, and the Southfield Institute of Art and Design. Southfield is also home to Michigan State University, which was founded in 1872. The Southfield area was once known as the "Motor City" because of the city's many lakes and rivers. The area is now known as Southfield because of its many parks and open space, as well as a number of residential neighborhoods and businesses. It has a population of more than 2.5 million people, making it one of the largest cities in Michigan, along with Detroit and Dearborn. It also has a large university, Michigan State, which is located near the city center. The City Centre is also the site of the Michigan State Medical Center, which opened in 1874. It's also the home of the South Michigan Institute of Arts and Design, which began in 1875. The town's name is derived from the SouthMichigan River, which runs through the center of the area. The center is also known as "Southfield" or "Southeastern Michigan" for short.

The Consulate of Macedonia in Detroit is in the Southfield Town Center. The Consulates of Iraq in Detroit and Iraq in Southfield are in the same town. Both are in Detroit's Southfield area. The consulate of Macedonia is in Detroit Town Center, and the consulate of Iraq is in South Detroit.

Penguicon has been held in Southfield regularly since 2014. This year's event will be the first in more than a year.

Geography

The main branch of the River Rouge runs through Southfield. The city is bordered by Detroit and Redford Township to the south, Farmington Hills to the west, Franklin to the north and Royal Oak, Berkley and Oak Park to the east. Southfield's northern border does not follow a single road, but lies approximately along Thirteen Mile Road. The separate city of Lathrup Village sits as an enclave in the eastern part of the city, completely surrounded by Southfield, with a population of around 2,000. The area is 26.28 square miles (68.06 km²) according to the U.S. Census Bureau, of which 26.27 square miles is land and 0.01 sq miles (0.03km²) is water. It is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, which is home to the University of Michigan and Michigan State University. In the city's western part, Inkster Road and Greenfield Road are the main roads, with Inkster being the only one that does not lead to the Detroit River. In its eastern part, the city is bounded by the Oakland River, which runs through the city. The Oakland River is the main source of water for the city of Southfield and its surrounding areas. The Southfield River is a tributary of the Michigan River, and flows through the southern portion of the town. The River Rouge is a major waterway in the city and flows into the Oakland and Macomb Rivers.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 71,739 people, 31,778 households, and 18,178 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 70.3% African American, 24.9% White, 0.2% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0,4% from other races, and 2.4% Hispanic or Latino of any race. The median income for a household in Southfield was $51,802, and the median incomes for a family was $64,543. The most common occupations for people are both white-collar and blue-collar jobs. Southfield is one of the most well-educated cities in the nation. The city's adult population holds a 4-year degree or higher, compared to the national average of 4.2%. Southfield's population is a city of professionals and managers, with a relatively large number of people living in the Southfield work in office and administrative support jobs (1093%), sales (16,00%), and support support (10,000) jobs. The average age of a Southfield resident is 42.5 years old, compared with the U.S. average of 44.7 years old. The population of Southfield has a median age of 38.9 years, and it has a population of 71.739. The US Census treats Hispanic/Latino as an ethnic category. Government

Southfield uses the council-manager form of government. The city council appoints a City Administrator, who manages the day-to-day operations of the city. The popularly elected mayor, who does not vote on council actions, has the right to veto council actions and appoints the city's planner, assessor, attorney, and members of various commissions. All these officials hold nonpartisan positions. The City Council consists of seven council members. The mayor is Kenson Siver, and the city clerk and treasurer are Sherika L. Hawkins and Irv M. Lowenberg. The state governor is Gretchen Whitmer, and federal officials are Gary C. Peters and Debbie Stabenow. The council president is Linnie Taylor, who is term expires November 2025. The vice president is Michael "Ari" Mandelbaum, whose term expires in November 2023. The treasurer is Sherika Hawkins, who's term ends in November 2025, and her husband, Jason Hoskins, is term ending in November 2024. The president and vice president are both term-limited, so their terms expire at the end of the next council term. The U.S. House of Representatives has a seat in Southfield, which runs from November 2021 to December 2025. Southfield is in Michigan's 14th Congressional District, which is in the state's central part. The district is home to the Michigan State Senate, which has seats in the 14th, 15th, and 35th state House districts.

Education

Southfield Public Schools operates area public schools. Southfield Senior High School for the Arts and Technology (commonly known as Southfield A&T) is the district's sole high school. There were originally two high schools in the district, Southfield and Southfield-Lathrup, but they were consolidated after the 201516 school year. Students living in parts of Northern Southfield attend schools in Birmingham City School District, while students living in the southeast corner of Southfield go to schools in Oak Park School District. The city is home to eight colleges, including Lawrence Technological University, Abcott Institute, Everest Institute and Oakland Community College. The Specs Howard School of Media Arts is in Southfield.Providence Medical Center offers residency training in various fields of medicine. The Southfield Public Library operates public libraries in the city. There is also a Southfield Christian School, Farber Hebrew Day School, Yeshivat Akiva, and Alex and Marie Manoogian School in the Southfield area. There are no public high schools or private schools in Southfied. The town has a large number of churches, many of which are non-denominational, and many of them are affiliated with the United States Air Force. The mayor is a former member of the U.S. Air Force, and served in the Air Force during the Second World War. It is also home to a number of private schools, including a private Jewish school and a private Christian school.
