Pillager is a city in Cass County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 469 at the 2010 census. The city was named after the Pillager Band of Chippewa Indians. It is located on the left (north) bank of the Crow Wing River, just east of Lake Placid. Minnesota State Highway 210 and County Road 1 are the main routes in the community. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.88 square miles (2.28 km²), of which 0.85 square miles of it is land and 0.03 square mile (0.08 km²) is water. The post office called Pillager has been in operation since 1886. The community is part of the Brainerd Micropolitan Statistical Area, which has a population of 469. The median income for a household in the city was $29,375, and for a family the median income was $34,792. About 6.2% of families and 8.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10% under the age of 18 and 3.1% of those over 65 or over. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.03. The gender makeup of the city is 50.7% male and 49.3% female, with the median age at 36.1 years of age being 36.4 years. There were 190 households, of which 50.5% were married couples living together, and 12.6% had someone living alone who was 65 or older.
History
A post office called Pillager has been in operation since 1886. The city was named after the Pillager Band of Chippewa Indians. Pillager is located in the Upper Great Lakes region of the U.S. state of Wisconsin. It is located on the banks of the Mississippi River, which flows through the city. The Pillager River runs through the center of the city, and the town of Pillager was once part of it. The town was once known as the "Pillager River" and was named for the Pillagers, who lived in the area at the beginning of the 19th century. The name Pillager means "the river that flows through" or "the stream that runs through" in the town's name.
Geography
Pillager is located in Sylvan Township (T133N R30W), on the left (north) bank of the Crow Wing River, just east of Lake Placid. Minnesota State Highway 210 and County Road 1 are the main routes in the community. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.88 square miles (2.28 km²) of which 0.85 square miles is land and 0.03 sq miles (0.08km²) is water. The city is located on the Minnesota River, a tributary of the Red River, which flows into the Mississippi River. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the city's population at 1,000. The town has a population of 1,100, up from 1,200 at the start of the 20th century. It is the only town in the state to have a post office, which was established in 1872. The post office is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, but is open on Fridays and Saturdays. It has been closed for more than 20 years, and was shut down on August 1, 2008, when the city was forced to close due to an outbreak of cholera. It was reopened on August 2, 2008. The community has a small population of about 1,500. The population of the city is about 2,000, down from 3,000 at the beginning of the century. There are no schools in the town, and the town has no post office.
