Duluth Township is a township in Saint Louis County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,941 at the 2010 census. The unincorporated communities of French River, Palmers, and Clover Valley are located within Duluth Township. North Shore Scenic Drive (County Road 61), the Minnesota 61 Expressway (MN 61), and Homestead Road are three of the main routes in the township. The township has a total area of 51.8 square miles (134 km²) of which 46.5 square miles is land and 5.4square miles (14 km²), or 10.34%, is water. The French River flows through the southwest part of Duluth township. Creeks that flow through the township include Big Sucker, Schmidt, and Stanley. The Talmadge River briefly enters the southwest corner of the township and flows into Lake Superior. The town is located on the North Shore of Lake Superior and is located in the northern part of the county. It is located between the townships of Lakewood and Normanna Townships and the uninc incorporated community of Knife River. It has a population of 1,723 as of the census of 2000, with a median income of $46,118. Its population was 98.26% White, 0.35% African American, 0.52% Native American, and 0.12% from other races, and. 0.75% from two or more races. 19.3% were of Norwegian, 14.6% German, 14.1% Swedish, 13.5% Finnish, 7.0% United States or American and 6.3. Irish ancestry according to Census 2000.

Geography

Duluth is the primary city name, but also Hermantown are acceptable city names or spellings. According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 51.8 square miles (134 km²) The French River flows through the southwest part of Duluth Township. Creeks that flow through the township include Big Sucker, Schmidt, and Stanley. The Talmadge River briefly enters the southwest corner of the township and flows into Lake Superior. The following are adjacent townships, cities, and communities: Lakewood Township, Normanna Township, North Star Township, Alden Township, Lake No. 2 Unorganized Territory of Lake County, Knife River, North Shore, Clover Valley, and North Shore. The unincorporated community of Knife River (east) is also located in the township. The township is home to the University of Minnesota Duluth, which is a member of the College of Saint Mary's. The University of Wisconsin-Duluth has a chapter in Duluth called the Duluth-North Shore chapter, which was founded in the early 1900s. It is based in the town of North Shore and has a campus of the same name. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has a training facility in the area. The town of Grand Rapids has a base of operations in the northern part of the county, near the city of Lake Superior, and a training center in the southern portion of the town. The community of Grand Marais is in the county and is located near the village of Grand Lake. The city of Superior, in the state's Upper Peninsula, is the largest city in the region.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,723 people, 669 households, and 479 families residing in the township. The racial makeup of the township was 98.26% White, 0.35% African American, 0.52% Native American,0.12% from other races, and 0.75% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.46% of the population. 19.3% were of Norwegian, 14.6% German, 14.1% Swedish, 13.5% Finnish, 7.0% United States or American and 6. 3% Irish ancestry according to Census 2000. The median income for a household in the Township was $46,118, and the median family income was $57,292. The per capita income for the township is $23,116. About 2.8% of those under age 18 and 4.5%. of those age 65 or over are living below the poverty line, including 1.7% of families and 1.1. of those over the age of 65. The township is located on the New Jersey Turnpike, which runs from New Jersey to New Jersey. The Turnpikes are the second-largest city in the state after New Jersey, with a population of 2.2 million. It is the only township in New Jersey that is not located in the New York City metropolitan area. It has a population density of 37.1 people per square mile (14.3/km²).
