Kalispell is the county seat and commercial center of Flathead County, Montana, United States. The 2020 census put Kalispell's population at 24,558. The city is 31 miles from Glacier National Park and 22 miles from Hungry Horse Dam. Flathead Lake, the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi river, is 7 miles (11 km) away. Heavens Gate (1980), an American western epic, was filmed in and aroundKalispell. The name is a Salish word meaning "flat land above the lake". History

It was the first western film to be released in the U.S. since The Wizard of Oz (1941) and The Godfather (1962) Both films were based on the novel by William Faulkner, who was born in Montana and grew up in the town of Fort Benton. The novel was adapted into the film Heavens Gate, which was released on October 25, 1980. The book was based on a novel written by Faulkter, who grew up and lived in Montana, and later moved to the town.
