Axtell is a village in western Kearney County, Nebraska, United States. It is part of the Kearney, Nebraska Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement at Axtell was made in the 1870s. Axtell became known as "The Windmill City" for the large number of windmill within the community. The population was 726 at the 2010 census. The village is located at 40°2848N 99°738W (40.479905, -99.127265). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.44 square miles (1.14 km²), all land. The median income for a household in the village was $41,625 and the median for a family was $16,693. About 7.5% of the population was below the poverty line, including 12.0% of those under 18 and 5.9% who were 65 or over. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.15. The gender makeup of the village is 49.6% male and 50.4% female. The town of Mosaic is also known as the home of the Mosaic Windmill, a windmill that is located in the town of Axtell. The windmill is home to a number of large windmill communities, including Mosaic, Bethmill, and Mosaic City, which is known for its large windmills.


Axtell was incorporated as a village in 1885 when the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad was extended to that point. It was named for a railroad worker.
