Old Hickory is a neighborhood of Nashville, Tennessee. It is named in honor of President Andrew Jackson. The area is best known for being the site of a large DuPont plant. Many of the houses were built to house DuPont employees and supervisors in the early days of the factory's existence. Many historic homes are located in the area known as the Village of Old Hickory, containing a number that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The main street through the area is Tennessee State Route 45 (Old Hickories Boulevard/Robinson Road) Old Hickorshire has its own post office, assigned ZIP Code 37138. The town is home to a country club, large golf course, city park, a Chamber of Commerce, and the Du Pont plant, which has been mostly shut down but continues to employ a few hundred workers. It has a very hot summers (average over 71.6 °F (22.0 °C) and mild winters (average over 32.0°F (0.0 °C) It is bordered by the Cumberland River on the north and west, Old Hickories Lake to the east, and former city of Lakewood to the south. To the north of the area, is also the location of Old. Hickory Lock and Dam. The mean annual temperature at Old Hickary Dam is 58.5 °F (14.7 °C). Monthly averages range from 37.1 °F  (2.8 °C), with a diurnal temperature variation of 19.8 to 26.3 °f (11.0 to 14.6  C).

Etymology

Old Hickory is the primary city name, but also Lakewood are acceptable city names or spellings. Old Hickory is named in honor of President Andrew Jackson, nicknamed "Old Hickary" Old Hickory was built in the 1800s. It is located in the town of Hickory, North Carolina. The town is known for its red-wood architecture. It was named for the town's redwood trees, which are known as "Hickory Pines" The town's name means "old town" in English, and "hickory" means "wood" or "wooden" in U.S. slang. It is also the location of Old Hickary Lock and Dam, which was built in the early 20th century. The town has a population of about 2,000. The area is located in the Tennessee Bootheel, which is an area that was once known as the Bootheels of the Tennessee River. It was once the site of one of the largest bootheels in the United States, with more than 1,000 people living in it in the late 1800s.
