The municipality is today largely a bedroom community for other cities and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Aclara Technologies operates a factory (previously owned by General Electric Company) that manufactures state of the art electric meters for the energy business. Somersworth has the smallest area and third-lowest population of New Hampshire's 13 cities. The city has a total area of 10 square miles (25.9 km²), which is 98 square kilometers (0.4 km²) and 02 miles (4.2 km) in land. History

The municipality is today largely a bedroom community for other cities and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. The upper end of High Street, however, continues to develop as a retail center, with several big-box chain stores. Aclara Technologies operates a factory (previously owned by General Electric Company) that manufactures state of the art electric meters for the energy business. One ship of the United States Navy was named after the city; the USS Somersworth (PCE(R)-849) was a PCE-842-class patrol craft. Commissioned in April 1944, it remained in service until decommissioned in September 1965.
Geography
Somersworth is located in eastern Strafford County at 43°1514N 70°5232W (43.253783, 70.875499). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.0 square miles (25.9 km²) The highest point in Somersworth is Prospect Hill rising just west of the city center, on which the city reservoir is built. New Hampshire Route 9 (High Street) is the main road through the city, leading north into Berwick, Maine, and south into Dover. The city is bordered to the northeast by the Salmon Falls River, which is also the state boundary with Maine. Somersworth has a population of 2,816. It is located on the New Hampshire-Maine border and is located near the junction of the New England Turnpike and the New York Turnpikes. The town of Somersworth was founded in 1838. It was named after a local family of the same name, who moved to Somersworth in the 19th century. The name Somersworth means "somersworth" in English, which means "home" or "place" in the U.S. It also means "little town" in French, "somersworth" and "somer" in German. It has a post office that opened in 1839. It closed in 1849. It reopened in 1852. It became a city again in 1854, when it was incorporated.

The Red River flows through the city and into the Mississippi. The river is one of the main sources of water supply for the city, as well as several other rivers.
Education
Somersworth's first high school opened in 1850 and was located at 17 Grand Street. Hilltop School, built at the same location in 1927, replaced the original high school. In August 2007, the upper floors of the school were closed by the New Hampshire State Fire Marshall after the city neglected to fix code violations they were warned about in November 2006. On February 17, 2009, the Somersworth City Council voted to approve bonding in the amount of $19.9 million for the construction of a new elementary school. The new school has been named Idlehurst, and has been functioning in the SAU 56 school system as of the start of the 2011-2012 school year. In May 2019, Somersworth Middle School was awarded 2019 Middle School of the Year. The middle school, led by Principal Dana Hilliard, was awarded this award for excellence in education for its ability to engage students and support their social and emotional growth.
