Lovettsville is a town in Loudoun County, Virginia, United States. Settled primarily by German immigrants, the town was originally established in 1836. The population was 1,613 at the 2010 census and an estimated 2,198 in 2019. In 2018, after the NHL's Washington Capitals advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals for the second time in franchise history, the council voted to temporarily rename the town "Capitals-ville" for the duration of the finals. The town sits on a low ridge within the Loudoun Valley, with the west side of town draining to Dutchman Creek and the east side draining to Quarter Branch, both streams flowing north to the Potomac River. During the Civil War, LoveTtsville was an important transportation stop for Union troops crossing the PotOMac River, and was among the few communities in Loudou County to vote against secession. In 1940, Lovettsvile was the site of a crash of a DC-3 airliner, killing 25 people, including U.S. Senator Ernest Lundeen, and became known as the Lovettevile air disaster. In 2012, a district of the town's historic district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is located at 39°16.4N 77°38.4W (39.2728, -77.6399) The town has a total area of 0.85 square miles (2.2 km²), of which 2.1 acres (8,354 m2), or 0.38%, are water.
History
Lovettsville is a town in Loudoun County, Virginia. It was established in 1836 as a town, but not fully incorporated until 1876. The town was the site of the worst air disaster in U.S. history in 1940, killing 25 people. In 2018, after the NHL's Washington Capitals advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals for the second time in franchise history, the town's council voted to temporarily rename the town "Capitals-ville" for the duration of the finals. It is the home of the Washington Capitals hockey team. The Lovettsvile Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. The Washington Capitals are currently playing the New York Rangers in the NHL Stanley Cup finals, which will be held at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. on June 12 and June 13. The Capitals have won the Cup twice in their history, once in 1998 and again in 2002. The game will be the first time the Capitals have reached the final in their franchise history. It will also be the third time that they have reached this stage of the playoffs. The team has won the title once before, in 1998, when they beat the New Jersey Devils in the semi-finals of the NHL Finals. The city is home to the Washington Wizards hockey team, which has won two Stanley Cup titles in the last three seasons. It also hosts the Washington Redskins football team, who won the championship in 2008 and 2009. The Redskins are the only team in the NFL to have won more than one Super Bowl title.

Virginia State Route 287 passes through the center of town, leading north 3 miles (5 km) to Brunswick, Maryland, and south 11 miles (18km) to Purcellville. Leesburg, the Loudou county seat, is 14 miles (23 km) southeast of Lovettsvile, and is the county seat for the entire state of Virginia, with a population of 1,788. The U.S. Census Bureau has a Lovetttsvillian population of 2,038. The population of the town was 2,071 at the 2010 census. The city is located on the banks of the Potomac River, which flows north to the Atlantic Ocean in Maryland and the Gulf of Mexico in the United States. It is the only town in the state to be on the National Register of Historic Places, which is listed as a National Park Service site. The state's highest point is Mount Airy, Virginia, which was established in 1881.

It has since been used as a military air base and training base for the United States Air Force. The base is still used by the Air Force as a training ground for airmen and airmen. It also serves as a base for air refueling and other emergency services. It's the only base in New Hampshire that is still open to the public.

Virginia State Route 287 is the only primary highway directly serving Lovettsville. SR 287 extends southward to Virginia State Route 7 at Purcellville. It also continues north to the Potomac River, where a bridge connects the north end of SR 287 to Brunswick, Maryland.

It takes place in the town's historic downtown area and is held over three days in December and January. The market is held in the historic town square at a site that dates back to the 17th century.
