Barnwell is a city in and county seat of Barnwell County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 4,750 at the 2010 census. U.S. Route 278 passes through the city, leading south 17 miles (27 km) to Allendale and northwest 42 miles (68km) to Augusta, Georgia. Turkey Creek, a tributary of the Salkehatchie River, runs through the town. Barnwell was named for Revolutionary War leader John Barnwell (1748-1798) Barnwell gave generously to the Confederate cause during the Civil War, serving as part of General Sherman's March on the Sea. The city is located at 33°1440N 81°2148W (33.244534, -81.363214) and has a total area of 8.0 square miles (20.7 km²) According to the United States Census Bureau, 7.8 square miles of the city is land and 0.15square miles (0.4 km²), or 1.86%, is water. It is located on the Savannah River on the Atlantic Ocean, almost west of Savannah on the Georgia-South Carolina border. In the mid-nineteenth century, the church of the Holy Apostles was stabled in the church's baptismal font in Barnwell. The church was later moved to Savannah, Georgia, where it is now a tourist attraction. It was built on the site of the former Blackville and Williston towns.

According to the United States Census Bureau, Barnwell has a total area of 8.0 square miles (20.7 km²) of which 7.8 square miles is land and 0.4 km², or 1.86%, is water. U.S. Route 278 leads south 17 miles (27 km) to Allendale and northwest 42 miles (68km) to Augusta, Georgia. SC 64 leads west 6 miles (10 km), to the east entrance of the Savannah River Site, which is a nuclear reservation. The city has a population of 1,816. It is located at 33.1440 miles (81.2148 km) and is located on the Georgia Turnpike, one of the busiest roads in the state. It has a post office with a ZIP code of 7054. It also has a small impoundment known as Lake Brown in the north part of the city. The town is home to the Barnwell High School, which was founded in 1883. The school is located in the town of Barn well. It was founded by Barnwell's great-great-grandfather, William Barnwell, who moved to the area in the early 1800s.

It was the site of the World War II Battle of the Bulge, which took place in World War I. It also hosted the Battle of Gettysburg, which was fought from 1871 to 1883. The Battle was the first battle of the Civil War, which ended in 1875. The town is located on the Missouri River, which runs through the city and into the Mississippi River. The Mississippi River is a tributary of the Red River.

History

Winton County was formed from a portion of the Orangeburg District in 1785. It was given its current name in 1798 when the county and its seat were named for Revolutionary War leader John Barnwell (1748-1800) Barnwell gave generously to the Confederate cause. Its most distinguished participant was Confederate General Johnson Hagood, who was later elected as governor of South Carolina, serving. Until 1832, the South Carolina Railroad connected Charleston to Hamburg, near Augusta, Georgia, upriver on the Savannah River. The designation of two stops on the railroad led to the development of the towns of Blackville and Williston in the mid-nineteenth century. Barnwell County originally stretched from the Savannah river on the west almost to the Atlantic Ocean. The baptismal font in the church was used to water the horses of Union General Judson Kilpatrick during his March to the Sea. The church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as are several other historic sites in the county.

Barnwell has a public library, a branch of the ABBE Regional Library System. The library is located on the town's main square. Barnwell is home to the Barnwell Elementary School. The school was founded in the early 1900s. It was the first school in the town to open its doors to the public. It closed its doors in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The town has a history of being involved in several civil rights movements. It has also been involved in the development of the city's infrastructure.
