Defiance is a city in and the county seat of Defiance County, Ohio, United States. It is located about 55 miles (89 km) southwest of Toledo and 47 miles (76 km) northeast of Fort Wayne, Indiana. The city contains the site of Fort Defiance, built by General "Mad" Anthony Wayne in August 1794, during the Northwest Indian War. Fort Winchester was built on the same spot during the War of 1812, but it was a larger fort that extended southward somewhat along the Auglaize River. In 1822 Defiance was laid out as a town, in 1845 it was made the county. seat of the newly created county, and in 1881 it became a city. Defiance lends its name to a distinct end moraine from the Wisconsian glaciation, which stands 20 to 50 feet above the border of the plain outside it. In 2010, there were 16,494 people, 6,663 households, and 4,291 families living in the city. The population was 88.1% White, 3.6% African American, 0.3% Native American, 4.8% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino people of any race were 14.4%. The city has a total area of 12.13 square miles (31.42 km²), of which, 11.62 square. miles (30.10 km²) is land and 0.51 square miles of water.

History

The city contains the site of Fort Defiance, built by General "Mad" Anthony Wayne in August 1794, during the Northwest Indian War. General Wayne surveyed the land and declared to General Scott, "I defy the English, Indians, and all the devils of hell to take it." Today a pair of cannons outside the city library on the Maumee River overlook the confluence and mark the location of Fort defiance. In 1822 Defiance was laid out as a town and in 1845 it was made the county seat of the newly created county, and in1881 it became a city. The city was named after Fort Defiances. The U.S. forces moved northeast along the Mamee River to fight the decisive Battle of Fallen Timbers near the current town of MaumEE, Ohio. This victory secured for the United States the Northwest Territory, now the states of Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin. Fort Winchester was built on the same spot during the War of 1812, but it was a larger fort that extended southward somewhat along the Auglaize River. Historical plaques in the sidewalks mark the full extent of Fort Winchester. It was built in 1812 and was the largest fort in the Northwest Territories at the time of the war. The town of Defiance is located on the banks of the Ohio River, near the city limits of the city of Columbus. The Ohio River is a tributary of the Maummee River, which runs through the city.

Defiance is located at 41°1655N 84°2146W (41.281891, -84.362856) The city has a total area of 12.13 square miles (31.42 km²) of which 11.62 square miles is land and 1.32 km² is water. Defiance lends its name to a distinct end moraine from the Wisconsian glaciation. The moraine varies in width from 2 to 4 miles, and according to Leverett, "it is like a broad wave whose crest stands 20 to 50 feet above the border of the plain outside it" The city is located in the U.S. state of Wisconsisia, which was once part of the state of Wisconsin. It is located on the Wisconsin River, which flows through the town of Defiance. The city's name comes from the Defiance moraine, which is the "last notable stand of the glacial front in this region" It is also the name of a town in Wisconsin, where it was once known as "Defiance" and is now called "Dodge City" The town's name is derived from the word "dodge," which means "to stand up" or "to fight" in a battle. The town is also known as the "City of Dodge" because of the town's nickname, "The City of Doves" and "The Doves," which is a reference to a Native American tribe that once lived there.

Defiance has three high schools: Defiance, Tinora and Ayersville High Schools. Defiance has a small college, Defiance College, which has about 1,000 students. The city has a public library, the Defiance Public Library System, and a public elementary school. The Defiance City School District has a K-12 school with about 2,500 students. It also has a private school with around 1,500 pupils. The town's public schools have about 3,000 pupils. There are no public high schools in the city, but there are two private schools with about 300 students each. There is a public high school in the town of Defiance with about 4,200 students, but it is not part of the city's public school system. It is located a few miles from the main city of the town, in a rural area known as the "Rural District" The town has a large number of churches, many of which are affiliated with the United Church of Christ, which is based in Defiance. It has a number of public parks, including a park with a playground, which was built in the early 1900s. It was the first public park in the state. The state's first public library was opened in 1858. The first public elementary was opened on September 1, 1858, and it is still open today. The school district has been in operation since 1859. The public school district was founded in 1859, and the first high school opened in 1861. The district has a total of 12 schools.

Parks and recreation

Defiance has several city parks that offer a variety of recreational activities. These parks include Kingsbury Park and Diehl Park. The city has a number of parks that are open to the public, including Kingsbury, Diehl, and Independence Dam parks. There are also several parks that can be rented for as much as $2,000 per year, including Independence Dam, Kingsbury and Kingsbury parks, and a park on the outskirts of the town of Defiance that is open for up to $3,000. The town also has several other parks for rent, such as a baseball diamond and a softball field. The parks are located on the shores of the Ohio River, which runs through the city. They are also available for rent by the night, as well as by day.
