Emmetsburg is a city in Palo Alto County, Iowa, United States. The population was 3,706 at the time of the 2020 census. Emmetsburg was named after the Dublin-born Irish nationalist Robert Emmet, who was executed at 25 for leading an 1803 rebellion against the British. The city was incorporated on November 17, 1877. It is located around the southern bay of Five Island Lake. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.97 square miles (10.28 km²), of which 3.81 sq miles (9.87 km²) is land and 0.16sq miles (0.41 km²") is water. It has a hot-summer humid continental climate, abbreviated "Dfa" on climate maps. In 2010 the city had a population of 3,904 people, 1,632 households, and 967 families living in the city. The median income for a household was $31,520, and the median for a family was $44,520. In 2000, there were 3.958 people and 1,620 households. The racial makeup of the city was 96.9% White, 1.0% African American, 0.2% Native American,0.5% Asian, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.83% of the population. History

The town was originally settled by immigrants during the Great Famine of Ireland between 1845 and 1852. Emmetsburg was named after the Dublin-born Irish nationalist Robert Emmet, who was executed at 25 for leading an 1803 rebellion against the British. The city was incorporated on November 17, 1877. It is located on the banks of the River Lough, which flows into the River Leitrim, which runs through the centre of the town. The town is home to the Irish National Museum, which was established in 1852 and opened in 1853. The museum is on the site of the former Emmet's home, which is now a private residence. It has a collection of more than 2,000 pieces of art, many of which have been donated by members of the public. It also has a museum of Irish history, which dates back to the 17th century. It was founded in 1845, and was named in honor of Emmet and his son, Robert, who led a rebellion against British rule in Ireland in 1803.
