Kent is an unincorporated community in Stephenson County, Illinois. It is home to Forreston State Bank, Kent Feed Mill, St. Paul's Lutheran Church (ELCA), Kent United Methodist Church, Kent Fire Department and the Kent U.S. Post Office. Kent was surveyed and platted in 1887 at the same time the Chicago Great Western Railroad laid its tracks through Stephenson County. The post office in present-day Kent was established on July 29, 1850. According to the 2000 Census, statistics which included the village of Kent and its surrounding zip code area, 274 people reside within the zip code 61044. Kent is located in the southwestern part of its township, near the Stephenson-Jo Daviess County line, and is also in proximity to Pearl City. The village is probably named for the Reverend Aratus Kent, a traveling evangelist from Galena, Illinois, who lived in the area in the 1800s and early 1900s. It was the only village within its township when it was founded and it was thought that the area had great potential for growth. The town is located about 12 miles west of Freeport, Illinois and is in the southern part of the county. History

The town of Kent, Illinois was founded in 1887. It was the first town to be built on the Chicago Great Western Railroad. The town was named for the Reverend Aratus Kent, an early settler of the area. It is now a suburb of Chicago, Illinois, with a population of about 2,000. The city was founded on July 29, 1887, when the railroad was laid through the town. The name Kent comes from the word "kent" which means "kettle" or "knee" in English. The word "Kent" means "town" in German and "kennel" in Spanish. It means "home" in the German language, which is used to refer to the town's name. It also means "village" or "town of" Kent, which was the name of the first village in the area to be founded. The village was named after the Reverend Aratus Kent, a man who lived in the town in the early 1800s. He died in 1891, leaving his family with a legacy of more than 1,000 years of history. He was buried in a plot of land that was later turned into a park. He is survived by his son, who is now the mayor of the town, and his grandson, who lives in the same town as the original owner of the land.
