Shelton is the county seat of Mason County, Washington, and the westernmost city on Puget Sound. The city was named after David Shelton, a delegate to the territorial legislature. The land was previously called "Cota" and was inhabited and managed by the Squaxin Island Tribe, or "People of the Waters", who had inhabited the land for centuries before white settlers. The economy was built around logging, farming, dairying and ranching as well as oyster cultivation. In November 2017, the voters of Shelton adopted a manager/council form of municipal governance. Shelton also identifies itself as the "Christmas Tree Capital". It was the last city in Washington to use a mayor/commission form of government. It has a warm summer Mediterranean climate (Köppen: Csb) with cold winters, similar to the larger cities of the Pacific Northwest. As of the census of 2020, there were 10,371 people, 3,416 households, and 2,055 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 75.6% White, 0.9% African American, 5% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 13.4% from other races, and 12% from two or more races. The average household size was 2.95 and the average family size was 3.73. The median age in Shelton was 32.4 years, with the gender makeup of 24.5% female and 50% male.

History

Shelton is the primary city name, but also Skok, Skokomish Nation are acceptable city names or spellings, Harstine, Kamilche, Skokomish on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The Simpson Timber Company mill dominated the landscape of the downtown area; the mill was sold to Sierra Pacific Industries in 2015, who are currently building a new mill. The city also identifies itself as the "Christmas Tree Capital" and is known as "The Christmas Tree Capital of the United States" The city was incorporated in the 1890s. It is located on the shores of Oakland Bay, which is home to the Olympic Mountains and the Olympic Peninsula. Education

The Shelton School District is composed of eight schools. Shelton High School is a New Tech Network Project-Based Learning high school for grades ninth through twelfth grade. The district also has an alternative school calledCHOICE Alternative School. The school district is part of the San Jose Unified School District. The schools are:Evergreen, Mountain View, and Bordeaux Elementary Schools, kindergarten through fourth grade; Olympic Middle School, fifth and sixth grades; Oakland Bay Junior High, seventh and eighth grades; and Cedar High School, ninth to twelfth grades. The high school is located in the town of Shelton, California, in the San Francisco Bay area of San Diego County. It is located on the San Diego-Shelton Expressway, which runs through the city's downtown area. It has a population of more than 100,000 people. It was founded in 1872 and is the oldest school district in the state. It opened in 1875. The first school was built in Shelton in 1876. The current school was opened in 1888. The town has a total of eight elementary schools and two junior high schools. It also has a high school, Cedar High, which opened in the 1970s. In the 1980s, the district added a middle school and a junior high school. It now has a middle and high school and two alternative schools, Evergreen and CHOICE Alternative Schools. It closed in the 1990s and added an alternative high school in the 2000s.
